As Chair of Walsall BSC I bring the skills and experience from my professional background, spanning 25 years, 12 of which at senior management and Director level, in the Public sector.
I became involved with the charity as a volunteer, which I have done for the past 4 years, and then became a member of the Trustee Board in 2019. During which time, I have been actively involved in formulating funding bid proposals with the Chief Officer and other colleagues. As a member of the Board, I have contributed to the strategic direction of the organisation and supported WBSC through adapting the services offered, to meet the challenging and fast changing needs of the community, partners and funding agencies through the Coronavirus Pandemic.
As a member of our local community I am passionate, have the strategic vision and leadership skills required to take WBSC forward and support the organisation in securing our financial future. I would also ensure we continue to be relevant in meeting the needs of Walsall’s most vulnerable communities.
Maureen works as a Union Rep, along with her full-time role of Women’s Equality Office, for Unite, representing the views of women. Maureen has a long -standing history with WBSC and is one of the founding members.
She has a wealth and knowledge of the voluntary sector and strives to see the development of members of her community.
I am Gene Johnson married with two children, currently serving as the secretary of the charity, a role I have done for over five years. I am very passionate about working with and for the local community. It is indeed a great privilege volunteering my time to such a great organisation.
I am a qualified Early Years Practitioner, presently working for the NHS. I have a wealth of experience working with young children and planning activities for women. I am also a Christian actively supporting the women’s ministry and audio team at my local church. My hobbies are creative writing and poetry.
Sonia McLaughlin has worked within the Health & Social Care setting for over 20 years. Her background is nursing and she previously worked for MSI Agency serving as an Equality Officer and Unison Learning Rep. I am currently an active member for Walsall Central Committee for Walsall Housing Group. Sonia has a wealth of knowledge of working with older people particularly within the hospital to home environment.
Tracey is also an education professional, specialising in teaching Maths and science to year 7-11 pupils. Tracey originally got involved with the organisation when she was employed as a teacher in WBSC’s supplementary School. Tracey lives in Walsall and has sat on other voluntary boards. Her passion is to work with the community and help them develop.
Keith Ashman has been part of the Management Committee for over 5 years. He became involved with WBSC as a service user on the Mental Health Project. He regularly attends the weekly sessions as well as volunteers his time to help other people like himself. Keith brings with him personal knowledge of what is needed to help people who are struggling mentally.
I am a retired schoolteacher who has taught children art for over 30 years. I have supported the WBSC by sending my children to the after-school club and was a committee member many years ago. It’s lovely to have the opportunity to re-join the WBSC committee again to support them in this new and changing community. I do voluntary work with several organisations in Walsall and have a passion for helping and supporting people in our community. I am an active member of a local church, working in the various departments within the organisation. My interests are photography, DIY, and walking.
